I had let this domain lapse quite some time ago and lately I’ve been feeling I have a growing need to have a central domain to put my stuff since the longer I keep spinning on this planet the more identities I acquire. For example:
1) Husband, father of three, New Yorker
2) Oracle expert
3) Cartoonist (self described)
And with all the various online identities these days, whether they are on twitter, facebook, linkedin, google+,etc I find it is impossible to keep them separate. My facebook (andyklock) account used to be strictly personal but then that coworker line blurred. I have several friends that I follow on twitter (andyklock) which I use mostly to stay in touch with Oracle related work, but have been known to post the occasional picture of my cute kids.
I’ve been taking a Graphic Novel course and have some things I’ve been working on with no where to go. Not that it has to go anywhere, but if it just sits in a dusty folder it’s like it never happened.
And today I was talking to my son J who is six about what I do for a living. He immediately associated my work with computers to having everything to do with video games. Computers = Video games, duh. So, we decided to work on a project together where we would make Battleship (a game we’ve been playing a lot lately). I know there is probably umpteen versions of this on the internet, but this probably isn’t a bad game choice to delve into the world of programming. There is some simplicity to the game. Concepts and a little math that he’ll be able to grasp. While there is some areas where we can add our own twist. He’s already got big ideas (most of which involve heavier artillery). So, we’ll see. My plan is to use ActionScript. I’m used to doing some things with it from when I was doing quite a bit of animation in Flash. This of course means that we won’t be able to play it on an iPad so not only will he learn the joys of programming, but also that corporations that do not embrace sharing and open competition are evil.
Welcome back.
